ARTISTS STATEMENT:
"The Art shown in this exhibit is of a different sort for me- I'm not normally known for landscapes and still-lifes. As I was trying to decide the theme of my next group of paintings I knew that whatever it was, it had to challenge me artistically. Although I have done the occasional landscape in the past, I have never worked on a series and decided to make that the challenge. I've loved the mountains of Western North Carolina ever since moving to Charlotte in 1991. Blowing Rock and the surrounding area are favorite weekend getaways for me and my family and as an avid hiker I appreciate the beauty, wonder and mystery of the high mountains and deep woods. With my passion for this part of the country I knew that it would make the perfect subject matter for my series. Still, I didn't step completely out of my creative box; among the finished landscapes are a few figurative pieces and most of the paintings contain my usual oddball traits. Almost all of these 12 paintings were created in the past year, but there are a couple of pieces that are from 2007. These were also done with the intent to celebrate the mountains and so belong in this group as well.
So here it is - my visual celebration of one of the most glorious areas in all of the United States. I hope that you get as much enjoyment looking at this work as I did creating it. Let me know what you think - All comments, positive and negative, are appreciated."
